The God Who Speaks
7. God Speaks Through Others
(Prophecy & Wise Counsel)
God designed us for community, and he often uses other people to speak his encouragement, correction, or direction into our lives. This can happen through preaching, prophetic words, spiritual mentors, or the wise counsel of trusted friends.
Proverbs underscores this repeatedly:
“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
(Proverbs 11:14)
In the New Testament, prophecy was a normal part of church life:
“Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.”
(1 Corinthians 14:1)
“The one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.”
(1 Corinthians 14:3)
Agabus, a prophet, warned Paul about coming trials (Acts 21:10-11). Barnabas encouraged the early believers (Acts 4:36).
When others speak into our lives, it is wise to weigh what they say prayerfully (1 Thessalonians 5:19–21), measure it against Scripture, and test the fruit - whether it brings peace, clarity, and aligns with God’s character.
Reflection:
Who has God used to encourage or challenge you? Be open to the voice of godly counsel in your life.
