The God Who Speaks
9. God Speaks Through Journalling (Listening Prayer)
Journalling is a powerful, practical way to learn to hear God’s voice. It involves writing down your prayers, questions, and thoughts, then waiting quietly and recording what you sense God impressing on your heart. Over time, this creates a record of God’s faithfulness, and patterns often emerge that confirm his leading.
Habakkuk demonstrates this principle:
“And the Lord answered me: ‘Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.’”
(Habakkuk 2:2)
When you journal, you are practicing listening prayer; creating space for God to speak personally to you, then recording and weighing what you hear. David modeled a similar heart posture:
“I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants.”
(Psalm 85:8, NIV)
Over time, reviewing your journal can reveal themes, such as repeated encouragements about God’s love, consistent invitations to trust him, or gentle correction or redirection. Journalling can also be a safeguard against forgetfulness - when we write, we honour God’s words to us and
Start by finding a quiet space. Pray and invite the Holy Spirit to speak. Then write your question or prayer. Sit in stillness, then write any impressions, scriptures, or pictures that come. Weigh what you record in light of Scripture.
Reflection:
What patterns or themes has God highlighted in your journaling? How have you seen him confirm His voice over time?
