St Matts is a church that has grown out of two - a merge of St Matthias Burley, and Riverside church.

In 2018, as part of the Diocese of Leeds vision, Bishop Paul, the then Bishop of Kirkstall, felt that God was nudging him to bring together the two churches to create a Resource Church that would be both a blessing to Burley, but also the wider city. As part of this vision, St Matts was to be encouraged to give away resources to other churches, including church planting in the city.
