COP30 Prayer Station

Welcome!

Thank you for visiting this space of prayer, reflection, and action.

June’s Theme: Consumerism and Simplicity

This month we are invited to pause, reflect on, and pray about our attitudes towards consumerism, our tendency towards overconsumption, and the impact of this on God’s creation.

Why This Matters

Every day, we are invited - and often pressured - to consume more. Advertisements promise happiness through the next purchase. We’re told we need more clothes, newer tech, better décor, faster delivery. But behind this endless cycle is a hidden cost: to people, to the planet, and to our own spiritual health.

Fast fashion is just one example. In the past two decades, global clothing production has doubled…but most of these garments are worn just a few times before being discarded. Behind each cheap t-shirt are exploited garment workers, polluted rivers, mountains of landfill, and carbon emissions that fuel the climate crisis.

Our consumer habits are often shaped by convenience and desire rather than by justice, sustainability, or discipleship. But Jesus invites us into a different kind of life: one of simplicity, contentment, generosity, and freedom. We are not defined by what we own or wear. We are called to live lightly, love deeply, and honour the dignity of every person and the beauty of creation.

How You Can Pray

Pray for ourselves - Ask God to help you see clearly the impact that overconsumption has on the climate: pollution, carbon emissions, waste, and habitat destruction. Pray for a deeper understanding of how everyday choices - like what we buy or throw away - are connected to God’s creation.

Pray for Justice - Ask God to protect garment workers and factory labourers working in dangerous or exploitative conditions in order to meet consumer demand. Pray for communities around the world facing the worst effects of climate change, many of whom have contributed the least to the crisis.

Pray for the Church - Pray that churches around the world would model lives of simplicity, stewardship, and climate care.

At our prayer station you’ll find interactive ways to engage with this theme. We invite you to join us in praying for the Church’s responsibility, and for our individual responsibility, to respond to God’s call to care for Creation.
